Update on Tuckahoe Shopping Center Meeting at Suffolk County Planning Commission

Dear Southampton Association member,

The Suffolk County Planning Commission (after 5 hours of testimony and discussion) deemed the Tuckahoe application incomplete!

The result of the decision is that the Town will be required to refer the application to the Commission again prior to making a decision. We are not sure what additional information will be required but our guess is it will be at least, in part, related to traffic.

This is a positive development, which provides time for other options to be explored. Thank you for the tremendous number of emails sent to the commission. We believe they made a difference!

Revised plan of Tuckahoe Shopping Center to go before Suffolk County Planning Commission October 11th

On Tuesday, October 11th, the Suffolk County Planning Commission will be meeting to review a newly revised (AGAIN) version of the Tuckahoe Shopping Center. Below is the E-mail address and location of the meeting, which starts at 10 AM in Riverhead.

Below is text of an e-mail you may wish to use:

Dear Suffolk County Planning Commission Members and Staff:

Please reject the change of zone application for the Tuckahoe Shopping Center. The location of this project will add more traffic to a road that is one of the most unsafe on all of Long Island. It is simply the wrong location for a developer’s project which has little demonstrated benefit to the community. Numerous shopping options already exist in Southampton, Hampton Bays and Bridgehampton.

The Town’s comprehensive study for CR39 strongly recommends avoiding high volume retail uses along the highway, primarily for safety reasons, but also to protect the unique charms of our hamlets and Villages. These are the qualities which attract visitors to the East End. Please don’t allow them to be destroyed.

Sincerely,

Please e-mail your views to: planning@suffolkcountyny.gov
(and pass this email on to others who may not be aware of this change of zone application)

Or attend the 10AM meeting on October 11 at:
Maxine S. Postal Auditorium, Evans K. Griffing Building, Riverhead County Center, 300 Center Drive, Riverhead, NY 11901
